Most children will know the number to call in an emergency: 000 (triple zero). However, they might not fully understand what constitutes an emergency or what to do when they need to call.

For Younger Children:

  • What is an emergency? Explain the kinds of situations when they should call 000, especially in the event of a fire.
  • Who to go to first: If there is an adult in the house, they should go to that adult quickly rather than calling 000 themselves.
  • Why safety is important: Teach them that fire can spread very quickly, and everyone’s safety depends on how they act in these situations. The key is to stay calm and act quickly.

For Older Children:

  • What to do in a fire emergency:
    1. Get out of the house immediately.
    2. Warn others as you escape, if it's safe to do so.
    3. Phone 000 once you're outside the house, or go to a neighbour's house to call if you can’t make it outside safely.
    4. Never re-enter a burning house—once you're out, stay out.
    5. Wait for help on the street—stay safely away from the fire and wait for the fire service to arrive.

Important Reminder:

  • Remember, 000 is the emergency number for all emergencies such as fire, police, or ambulance. Make sure your children know that 000 is the number to call in any emergency.
