MFS retained firefighters are not employed full time by the MFS. They often have primary employment elsewhere but are also employed by the MFS to do firefighting duties on a part time, ‘on-call’ basis. This allows you to register your own availability.

Yes. Retained firefighters are paid for responding to incidents and for attending training, in addition to being paid a retainer allowance.

All members of the community who meet the eligibility criteria are welcome to apply at their local MFS regional station. The MFS encourages people of diverse ages, gender, and cultural backgrounds to join.

Yes, you can.

Firefighter training is held on a weeknight, and you can discuss with your local regional MFS station your availability to attend incidents.

MFS Retained Firefighters are based at 17 regional fire stations spread across South Australia.

That’s ok! You don’t need to have experience with emergencies or firefighting to apply. All training is provided to you by the MFS and your local fire station.

In this initial training you will cover Breathing Apparatus training and Basic Firefighting Skills.

You won't be able to do attend any incidents until this training is completed.

If you are successful in becoming a Retained Firefighter with the MFS, you will be contributing to the safety and welfare to those in your local community. There is a tremendous sense of camaraderie, teamwork and achievement in keeping those you care about most safe.
