Eligibility to apply

You must be at least 18 years of age to meet the driver's licence eligibility requirements. You can find out more about the eligibility requirements including the age you required to be obtain your MR Licence (external site).

You must hold a current and valid C Class (Car) driver's licence when applying for the role. A probationary or provisional driver's licence will not be accepted.

To be eligible to obtain your MR Licence (which is required prior to commencing the recruit course) you must have held your full C Class driver's licence for at least one year.

Yes. Providing that licence is the equivalent to the minimum South Australian licence required.

First aid certification is no longer a prerequisite to apply.

Candidates must have current First Aid Certification for Provide First Aid (HLTAID003 or HLTAID011) prior to commencing.

If you are not a permanent Australian resident you will need to provide evidence of your eligibility to work in Australia through a Citizenship Certificate or other evidence issued by the Australian Government.

If you have a visa or are not a permanent resident, then any offers can only be inline with your visa end date.

What documents can I submit for proof of citizenship or residence?

  • Proof of Visa allowing you to work in Australia
  • Other evidence of permanent residency issued by the Department of Home Affairs.

The MFS Uniform and Dress Code states that:

"visible tattoos must not be offensive to recognised standards of decency or reflect adversely on the professional image the community expects from employees serving in the MFS."

Acceptance is at the discretion of the MFS in accordance with the MFS Uniform and Dress Code.

You are required to provide a Driver Licence History report as part of the application process.

As part of the application process you are required to give the MFS consent to obtain personal information relating to criminal history. This information shows a record of offences even when a conviction has not been recorded.

The results of any criminal history screening process are considered on a case-by-case basis. Candidates who have criminal conviction/s of a certain nature in the last 5 years will not be eligible to proceed in the process.

Candidates must complete a Pre-Employment Declaration to be eligible for an offer of employment within the South Australian public sector. Additional pre-employment checks may also be required.

The current MFS medical Standards consider colour blindness to be unsuitable with the role and therefore may disqualify you from becoming a full-time firefighter.

As part of the mandatory testing, thorough medical examinations are conducted on applicants who progress through the selection process.

As part of the medical examination, an audiology examination will be conducted without the use of hearing aids.

Average hearing thresholds should be equal to or better than 40dB in the better ear. Average hearing threshold is the simple average of pure tone air conduction thresholds at 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 Hz.

The MFS has Full-Time Firefighter positions in both Mount Gambier and Port Pirie Fire Stations. Suitable applicants living within those regional locations are encouraged to apply.

No. There is no fee required to participate in the Full-time Firefighter Recruitment and Selection Process.

No. There a no limits on how many times you can apply or timeframes when you can reapply.

Selection process and recruit training

An application may take anywhere from 5 to 18 months to progress from application to an employment offer.

We will try to provide as much notice as possible. Due to timeframes you may only be given one week's notice to attend any stage of the process.

The Psychometric Testing is now conducted online and can be taken at home. There are no physical requirements for this assessment.

No. There are no specific areas of study that would necessarily increase the success of your application.

Full-Time Firefighter vacancies with the MFS are determined by operational requirements. Each squad will have approximately 18 recruits, but the number of vacancies may vary between recruitment campaigns.

Yes. Recruits are paid from their start date with the MFS based on the Recruit Firefighter Award Rate. The rates of pay can found here: Enterprise Agreement SAMFS 2022 (external site) (PDF) .

The majority of the Recruit Course takes place at the Angle Park Training Centre, with various components held at the Adelaide Metropolitan Fire Station. There is also a short two-day live-in component at the CFS State Training Centre in Brukunga.

The length of the recruit training course is approximately 16 weeks. This is subject to change based on any public holidays which may fall with this period.

Employment and conditions

Candidates must be up to date with their vaccinations. This includes Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B.

Yes. A 12-month probationary period applies from the commencement of employment as a Recruit Firefighter.

It is possible that you may be offered employment at Port Pirie or Mount Gambier Fire Stations where full-time crews are employed.

Upon graduation, you will be employed as a reliever, working across a range of fire stations within the MFS metropolitan area.

During your probationary period, you will have the opportunity to nominate preferred station locations, however, vacancies may take time to become available and preferences are not guaranteed.

All firefighters are required to maintain flexibility and be prepared to work at any MFS station within the metropolitan area.

Full-Time Metropolitan Firefighters work on a shift roster over four days; two 10-hour days followed by two 14-hour nights. Followed by four days off duty. This includes weekends and public holidays.

Full- Time Firefighters at Port Pirie work a shift roster over four days; 24 hours on duty followed by three days off duty.

Full-Time Firefighters at Mount Gambier work a shift roster over four days; four day shifts on duty, 8:00am – 6:00pm, followed by four days off duty.

The MFS does accept requests for lateral transfers from other States or Territories within Australia. Details around this process will be posted on the MFS website. Please register your interest (external site), if you would like to proceed.

Prior service as a firefighter in another fire authority will not be recognised for promotion in the MFS. However, following the completion of one year of service, staff may apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL) for progression through the MFS Staff Development Framework, up to the rank of Senior Firefighter only.

Firefighters are entitled to up to 18 weeks paid Maternity Leave and up to 12 months leave after having a child. After this they can return to their previous role as a firefighter. Whilst pregnant, firefighters are offered a range of non-hazardous duties.

Paternity leave is available for eight days for eligible firefighters (the equivalent of two weeks).
