Yes, there is a probationary period of 12 months from commencement of date of employment as a Recruit Firefighter.

It is possible that you may be offered employment at Port Pirie or Mount Gambier Fire Stations where full-time crews are employed.

When you first graduate you will be reliever - working at any and all fire stations within the MFS Metropolitan area. During your probationary period you will be offered an opportunity to put your preference of station in, this may take a significant period of time to be become vacant. A preference is not guaranteed, you will be required to have flexibility to work at any of our xx stations in the metropolitan stations.

Full-time Metropolitan Firefighters work on a shift roster over four days; two 10-hour days followed by two 14-hour nights. Followed by four days off duty. This includes weekends and public holidays.

Full- time Firefighters at Port Pirie work a shift roster over four days; 24 hours on duty followed by three days off duty.

Full-time Firefighters at Mount Gambier work a shift roster over four days, four day shifts on duty, 8:00am – 6:00pm, followed by four days off duty.

The MFS does accept requests for lateral transfers from other States or Territories within Australia. Details around this process will be posted on the MFS website. Please register your interest, if you would like to proceed.

Prior service as a firefighter in another fire authority will not be recognised for promotion in the MFS. However, following the completion of one year of service, staff may apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL) for progression through the MFS Staff Development Framework, up to the rank of Senior Firefighter only.

Rates of pay and other employment conditions are outlined in the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service Enterprise Agreement 2022.

Firefighters are entitled to up to 18 weeks paid Maternity Leave and up to 12 months leave after having a child. After this they can return to their previous role as a firefighter. Whilst pregnant, firefighters are offered a range of non-hazardous duties.

Paternity leave is available for eight days for eligible firefighters (the equivalent of two weeks).
