Learning & Development

The MFS Learning and Development Department holds primary responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective programs for our firefighters to ensure they remain among the most effectively-trained in Australia.

The MFS Learning and Development Department endeavours to apply dynamic planning and decision making processes, underpinned by strategic thinking in 'fostering a culture of lifelong learning through industry leading career management and skill development systems''

The Learning and Development Department applies two major learning and development strategies:

  • the Staff Development Framework that ensures that all MFS personnel are individually provided with the skills they need to perform their required roles and tasks throughout their career; and
  • an operational skills development and maintenance program that emphasises team-based learning activities that deliver the best possible outcomes for our personnel and the community.

We intend to continuously improve our performance through consultative forums with input from our key stakeholders.

We have aligned our priorities with the needs of MFS staff and the directions and objectives outlined in the MFS Strategic Plan.

The MFS provide its personnel with a career pathway aligned to Nationally Recognised Training Standards. Our Staff Development Framework (SDF) ensures all our firefighting personnel are provided with access to the Industry Standard Public Safety Training Package.

Our department uses cross functional teams of operational firefighters, educational practitioners and administrative staff to ensure personnel are provided with the best possible learning outcomes.

The MFS manages the career paths of its personnel through effective recruitment, staff development and promotional systems. The merit based selection processes implemented for all positions ensures we appoint the best-suited personnel to protect the public of South Australia
