Previous employment: Office work, Hospitality
Samantha is a Firefighter with the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) and loves how it enables her to lead an active lifestyle.
Samantha held many different jobs, from office work to hospitality, before she decided to apply for a position as a firefighter.
“I’ve always been a very active person and I can’t believe I used to sit down for 8-10 hours a day in an office job. The main reason I joined was because I like to help people and be involved in the community. It’s a career – not just a job,” she said.
Samantha loves how many different facets there are to the role.
“I love everything about it. Mostly I like visiting schools and getting out in the community. I enjoy showing school kids the truck and going on school visits, which happens fairly regularly.
“I also really enjoy being part of the MFS community. The people who work here have achieved the most amazing things and it is great to work alongside them,” she said.
Samantha loves the challenge of learning new skills and undergoing training.
“When I joined, I was surprised that there is a lot more involved in firefighting, apart from actually fighting fires, such as HAZMAT, technical rescues, and a large number of departments that require specialised skills. As a result, we are always learning something new,” she said.
The health side of the role fits with her own approach to health and wellness.
“I have always been health conscious and it’s inspiring to me to be around people who have these like-minded interests. I played Premier League Netball, I have always been an active member of the gym and I have always been interested in anything physically active, so this is the right job for me,” she said.
