MFS Chief Officer appointed 2013-14 International IFE President

South Australia's Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) Chief Officer, Grant Lupton has been elected the 2013-14 International President of the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE).

It is a significant appointment for the Australasia region and believed to be the first time a Chief Officer of an Australian fire service has been appointed to the role.

MFS Chief Officer, Grant Lupton is the first International IFE President to simultaneously hold the position of Chair of the IFE.

Chief Officer Lupton has served as the Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive of the MFS in South Australia since March 2002, making him one of the longest serving chief officers in the organisation's 150 year history.

Mr Lupton said he is humbled by the honour of being appointed the 2013-14 International President of the IFE.

"I believe the IFE fulfils a crucial and expanding leadership role, through supporting professional development and the worldwide information and communication networks that are created through our Institution."

"I believe I can help to further the Institution's international objectives and to assist in meeting the challenges facing our profession. I believe it would be of value to bring an Australasian perspective to the position of International President for the first time since the IFE was established in 1918."

Prior to his appointment in South Australia, Chief Officer Lupton was the Deputy Fire Commissioner for the Province of British Columbia, Canada. Mr Lupton has served as a Director of the International Fire Chiefs' Association of Asia and is an Honorary Life Member of the Fire Prevention Officers' Association of British Columbia.

Chief Officer Lupton is an elected Director of the International (UK) and Australian Boards of the Institution of Fire Engineers and is also a Member of the International Metropolitan Fire Chiefs' Association, the International Fire Marshals Association and the Australasian Fire Authorities Council.

"One of the aspects that I truly value about the collegiality of the IFE is how members come together from many different countries and cultures, regardless of rank, position or employment, to learn from each other, to collaborate and contribute to fire engineering and to support each other as true professionals," Chief Officer Lupton said.
