Nobu - PPE

Name: Nobuyuki (Nobu)

Years of service: 8 years

Roles held: Recruit, Firefighter, Senior Firefighter, Marine Trainee for Gallantry

Current Rank: Senior Firefighter

Why did you want to become a firefighter?

I wanted to become a police officer or a firefighter. I liked the idea of "doing the right thing" to the benefit of society in my career.

What do you love about your job?

Opportunities to learn and develop professional skills.

The flexible lifestyle that shift work provides.

Being appreciated for the work that you do by the general public.

What advice would you have for someone wanting to apply to become an MFS firefighter?

Try it out. This is a very popular job, everyone knows that. But DO NOT talk yourself out of your dream of becoming a firefighter. Apply for it and see what happens.

What would you say to someone who’s often wondered but never applied to become an MFS firefighter?

Same as above.

What career development opportunities are available to you as a firefighter?

You can develop your skills in specialised areas. Hazmat, Rescue or Marine.

You could join the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) taskforce which can be deployed nationally and internationally.

You can go for a promotion to become a Station Officer and beyond...

What are your future aspirations within the MFS?

I am currently being trained as a marine trainee. I have been given the opportunities to study and obtain several marine qualifications. In the near future I will be eligible to sit for a promotion for Marine Officer who is in charge of the Emergency Response Vessel, the ‘Gallantry’.  This has allowed me to gain other qualifications that can be applied in my role as firefighter.

How does the role fit with your lifestyle?

As a separated single parent, shift work can be tricky to organise care for a child. However I do get to spend quality time with my son on my days off and the days that I'm on night shift.

Have you been able to utilise any ‘flexible work arrangements’ to assist with your family situation?

I received parental leave when my son was born.

What interests do you have outside of work?

I am a competitive (natural) bodybuilder. I also play music.

What career did you hold before becoming an MFS firefighter?

I was a security guard at a pub and a night club. I was also an aspiring musician and used to perform gigs in venues around Adelaide.

The MFS is committed to attracting a field of gender and culturally diverse applicants to ensure its workforce increasingly reflects the diversity of the community it serves and protects. MFS has a strong focus on providing a family friendly working environment including flexible working conditions for new parents.
