Ali - PPE

Name: Ali

Years of service: Less than 1 year

Roles held: Recruit, Firefighter

Current Rank: Firefighter

Why did you want to become a firefighter?

I’ve always wanted to be in a position where I could help the community and be a part of a close knit group of colleagues. After speaking to a number of people in the emergency services I knew that Firefighting was the best suit for me.

What do you love about your job?

Every day at work is different; the problem solving involved at jobs is great. Also being able to work in such a productive team environment is very fulfilling.

What advice would you have for someone wanting to apply to become an MFS firefighter?

Keep fit and try out, it is a very competitive process but you won’t know if you have what it takes unless you have a go!

What would you say to someone who’s often wondered but never applied to become an MFS firefighter?

Find someone who is in the job or do a bit of research to make sure that you are the right fit for the job and the job is the right fit for you, there are lots of resources available from the MFS website, employees, retirees etc.

What career development opportunities are available to you as a firefighter?

There is always something to learn. Promotions opportunities, Urban Search and Rescue (USAR), road crash rescue, skills maintenance, communications just to name a few. I think there is an avenue of interest to suit everyone.

What are your future aspirations within the MFS?

I’m very new in the job but would aspire to make it to the Senior Firefighter rank, from there I’ll decide whether I’ll continue my study towards Station Officer or train up onto some of the more specialised rescue appliances.

How does the role fit with your lifestyle?

The shift system is excellent, I am married with a 1 year old daughter and I get to balance work and time with my family.

Have you been able to utilise any ‘flexible work arrangements’ to assist with your family situation?

The system is very flexible for balancing family requirements, meaning that I haven’t missed out on any of my big family events.

What interests do you have outside of work?

I love outdoor activities and sports.

What career did you hold before becoming an MFS firefighter?

I was a secondary school teacher.

The MFS is committed to attracting a field of gender and culturally diverse applicants to ensure its workforce increasingly reflects the diversity of the community it serves and protects. MFS has a strong focus on providing a family friendly working environment including flexible working conditions for new parents.
