Special Operations Department

The Special Operations Department Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) including Chemical Biological Radiological & Nuclear (CBRN), Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), Major Events and the Environment is managed by a District Officer and has a permanent staff of nine. 

The Special Operations Department provides maintenance, training, education and advice for all aspects of Hazardous Materials including Chemical Biological Radiological & Nuclear (CBRN) response, Respiratory protection, Major Event response & Environmental policy.

Hazmat / CBRN

The Hazmat / CBRN section is responsible for the provision of specialist Hazmat / CBRN response, scientific advice and education to the MFS and external stakeholders.

Self Contained Breathing Apparatus

The SCBA section co-ordinates the movement, servicing schedules and maintenance of breathing apparatus equipment and associated telemetry, hydraulic and pneumatic rescue equipment, fire fighting branches, chemical protective clothing, oxygen therapy and resuscitation units, breathing air compressors and cylinders. 

The section also co-ordinates and conducts SCBA training for the MFS and other Emergency Service Organisations.

Major Events/ Environment

The Major Events section is responsible for providing advice to internal and external customers of the MFS to ensure fire safety is maintained at South Australian Major Events and is compatible with emergency service operational needs.  

The Major Events Officer ensures the MFS complies with and maintains a policy and commitment to the sustainability of the environment.
